I always loved big coupes. Big comfy highway cruiser with a big V6 and a bit of style. It seems that lately these are really becoming a rarity unless you are spending big bucks. I mean Honda still has the accord coupe but other than that you really don’t see too many of them unless you are spending big bucks on a german coupe.
Other than a muscle car you really don’t have too many choices at all.
What about the cars like the Mitsubishi Eclipse, Dodge Avenger Coupe, Chrysler Sebring Coupe,Buick Riviera, Chevy Monte Carlo,Toyota Solara, ect.
How come they no longer make any of these? Did people not buy these back in the day?

Because they’re as unpractical as a sports car and as fun to drive as a family sedan?

as a tall man who finds his head and arms always blocked from comfort by the door column i wish I could by a big coupe with big ass doors so I could not look like i’m hiding and also enjoy some window arm action in comfort!

They were replaced by the pony cars, for better or worse.

Weren’t those three basically the same vehicle?

Because they are heavy with uninspired styling and handling?

My favorite (because it’s the one and only coupe I ever owned) was the supercharged Riviera from Buick. Fun to drive, and mine was modded up for moar power so it was a blast to drive. Super comfortable too.

Most of them sucked (DSMs in particular) and nobody bought them because everyone knew they sucked.

The problem is the pony cars have the stereotype to go with them. You get pulled over all the time to “check your documents” ect. The big coupes did not really have this negative stigma.

Those were awesome and that’s exactly the type of car I’m talking about.

I, for one, never saw the appeal of chopping two doors off of a rental fleet car. I just don’t get it. As such, I’ve never cared for the Sebring coupe, Solara, Accord Coupe, later Monte Carlos, etc. It’s got all the usability of a coupe with all the fun of a beige mobile. Unless it was a 2-door personal luxury car (Lincoln Continental, Eldorado, Riviera, CLK) I fail to see the point.

you can always be creative with the definition of a 2 door hatch

You and your obscure german-american pseudo sports car built by a company that no longer exists have no room to talk.

A Beige mobile has it’s merits. They are comfortable and soak up the bumps like it’s nobodies business.
I would rather use a late 90’s Buick Riviera to cross the country than a Scion FRS. It’s not always about driving dynamics sometimes it’s about being able to sit back, relax and enjoy the scenery.

Right, but why not do that with all four doors firmly attached? I’m not saying it’s wrong to only want two, but for me, it just doesn’t compute.

I personally see a ton of G6 coupes. I guess it isn’t particularly “big” but it still kinda falls into what you’re talking about. Same goes for the Altima Coupe.
I’m guessing they were all killed off because most people just bought pony cars/sports car. Though these usually had more usable interior space because FWD.

A Chrysler built on the Challenger platform, that’d be nice. The Elmiraj concept gives me hope.

both cars that will end up being too expensive if they ever get made.

I sorta meant how come they don’t make them anymore. I still see all these too.
I agree with your last statement but I’m still not all that happy about it.

Love the supercharged Rivieras, very distinctive looking cars and plenty quick. I do love my Mark VIII even more though.

I’ve seen this car twice in person, and it looks great. It’s big, it’s got two doors, a big motor, etc.
But as others have mentioned, I don’t see the attraction. For an “ordinary”, everyday car, two doors doesn’t work for me. If I had the money to buy a 2-door car, it’d be a V12 Aston Martin, a Bentley Continental, or a Lamborghini. Or maybe a Porsche Cayman. But I think you see what I’m getting at...
